Oklahoma defeats Texas 27-24 with last-second field goal

Summary

Oklahoma beat Texas 27-24 at the Cotton Bowl, snapping a one-game losing streak in the Red River Rivalry.

Oklahoma rallied to a 27-24 victory over Texas at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas on Saturday. Kicker Tate Sandell converted a 47-yard field goal as time expired, giving the Sooners a three-point win.

The Sooners improved to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in SEC play, while Texas fell to 4-1. Oklahoma scored touchdowns on a blocked punt, a short rush and an interception return, and added the decisive field goal in the final seconds.

Quarterback John Mateer connected with wide receiver Isaiah Sategna III on a back-shoulder pass that set up Sandell’s kick. Defensive back Courtland Guillory intercepted a pass from Texas quarterback Arch Manning, and later Peyton Bowen returned an interception for a 42-yard touchdown.

Texas had a chance to take the lead when kicker Gianni Spetic missed a 55-yard attempt, and a subsequent 4th-and-2 play did not convert. The Longhorns responded with a 75-yard touchdown drive, tying the game at 24 before Oklahoma’s final drive.

"We need to create some momentum," Sooners head coach Brent Venables said after the win.

The result marks Oklahoma’s first Red River Rivalry victory since 2023 and ends a three-game losing streak against Texas.
