Yorkshire Wildlife Park reopens tiger enclosure after fatal incident

Resumen

The Land of Tigers exhibit at Yorkshire Wildlife Park reopened a week after a Siberian tiger killed 24-year-old William Chapman, who entered the enclosure despite barriers.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park in northern England reopened its "Land of Tigers" exhibit on Friday, less than a week after a Siberian tiger attacked a visitor. The tiger, named Altair, was observed lying calmly in its pen while staff answered questions from the public. The enclosure had been closed following the death of 24-year-old William Chapman, who climbed two fences and entered the area on Saturday. Chapman was dragged away by the tiger and died at the scene; the coroner recorded the cause of death as multiple traumatic injuries resulting from the animal interaction. A park spokesperson said the tiger is "safe and well and will not be euthanized." The spokesperson added that the animal will remain at the park under existing safety protocols. Investigators were informed that Chapman had a diagnosed mental health condition and was receiving care from mental health services. Eyewitness Anthony Hunt told the Times of London that Chapman appeared calm before entering the enclosure and that he knelt and spread his arms toward the tiger, saying, "He had his arms wide open like he was saying: ‘Come here tiger. Kill me.’" The park has reinstated barriers and increased staff monitoring to prevent further incidents.
