Philadelphia police officer killed, partner injured in West Philly shooting ambush
A veteran Philadelphia police officer died and a second officer was wounded after an ambush on North 52nd Street early Saturday; the suspect was later apprehended.
A 10-year veteran of the Philadelphia Police Department was fatally shot and his partner was seriously injured during an ambush on North 52nd Street shortly after midnight on Saturday. Officers responding to a report of a person with a gun encountered heavy gunfire and found the two officers on a porch with multiple gunshot wounds.
Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel identified the deceased officer as 40-year-old Shane Sieber, who was shot three times and left behind a wife and two young children. The surviving officer, a 33-year-old father of five, was shot 12 times and remains in stable but critical condition.
Bethel said the suspect fled the scene, fired at additional officers in a nearby alley, and then climbed a tree before surrendering when SWAT units arrived. The suspect is now in custody and will face charges from the District Attorney's office. Investigators recovered three firearms linked to the shooting, including two handguns and a shotgun.
Mayor Cherelle Parker, speaking at a press conference, noted the incident as the third fatal police shooting in the city within a week and announced plans to work with Governor Josh Shapiro on legislation to expand Pennsylvania's involuntary commitment laws to include severe mental illness, substance use disorder, and other behavioral challenges.
"We are coming to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and seek legislation that will expand involuntary commitment laws to cover not only severe mental illness but substance use disorder and any kind of mental and/or behavioral challenge that could interfere with Philadelphia's ability to keep itself safe," Parker said.
"We can no longer act as if the laws we have on the books are enough to protect the Commonwealth," she added.
