Mayor Mamdani faces internal criticism over ally's call to remove NYPD commissioner
City Hall staff and Democratic Socialists of America members have expressed frustration with congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier after she demanded the dismissal of Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch following an ICE shooting incident.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani is encountering dissent within his administration after congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier, whom he endorsed in the recent primary, publicly called for the removal of NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch. Chevalier’s social-media post criticized the department for allegedly violating New York City’s sanctuary policies in the wake of an ICE operation that resulted in the shooting of an undocumented migrant in the Bronx.
City Hall staffers reportedly reacted strongly to Chevalier’s statements, questioning her approach and its potential impact on the mayor’s agenda. One source said the administration felt the remarks “undermined” Mamdani’s position.
The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), including national and local chapters, have also joined the criticism, urging Tisch’s resignation and the disbandment of the NYPD’s Strategic Response Group (SRG). DSA member and state Senate candidate Illapa Sairitupac wrote, "Abolish ICE, disband the SRG, fire Tisch."
Mayor Mamdani, who appointed Tisch and previously pledged to dissolve the SRG, has not publicly responded to the demands. Sources indicated that while Mamdani’s adviser Morris Katz recommended endorsing Chevalier, the mayor remains uneasy about her tactics. Campaign volunteers have been instructed to avoid commenting on the mayor and focus on Chevalier’s priorities.
The controversy highlights tensions between the mayor’s office, his endorsed candidates, and progressive activist groups over law-enforcement policy and immigration enforcement in the city.
