Texas Senate candidate James Talarico addresses health care, energy, and foreign policy at town hall

Resumen

Democratic Senate hopeful James Talarico outlined his positions on a public health option, an "all-of-the-above" energy strategy, and support for Ukraine during a CNN-Jubilee Media town hall in Texas.

James Talarico, the Democratic candidate for the Texas U.S. Senate, returned to campaigning after a brief illness and participated in a town hall organized by CNN and Jubilee Media. Voters from across the political spectrum asked him about the economy, health care, energy, immigration, and foreign policy.

Talarico said a "robust public option" for health insurance is needed to compete with for-profit insurers. On energy, he advocated an "all of the above" approach, promising to defend the state's oil and gas sector while also supporting renewable development, and warned he would challenge either party if they threatened those interests.

He called for eliminating "big money in our politics," proposing bans on super-PACs and corporate PACs and suggesting that closing billionaire tax loopholes could help reduce the national debt. Regarding immigration, he urged a middle-ground reform that would deport undocumented immigrants who commit violent crimes while expanding legal pathways and retaining ICE.

On foreign policy, Talarico defended continued aid to Ukraine, describing it as a cost-saving measure to counter Russian aggression, and expressed criticism of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu while supporting a two-state solution for Israelis and Palestinians. He also voiced support for "fair voter ID" standards, noting inconsistencies in current Texas identification rules, but declined to comment on the Save America Act.

"I am in favor of fair voter ID, and I say fair because here in Texas, I think that a lot of our voter ID policies are discriminatory," Talarico told a voter.

"I will stand up to my own party if they mess with our oil and gas industry, and I will stand up to the other party if they mess with renewables," he added.

The candidate also described his recent flu as a "nasty case of the flu" and dismissed conspiracy theories about his whereabouts as part of a "rage economy." CNN reporters contributed to the coverage.
