Eva Marie Saint, Oscar-winning actress, dies at 102

Resumen

Eva Marie Saint, celebrated for roles in "On the Waterfront" and "North by Northwest," died of natural causes at 102, surrounded by family.

Eva Marie Saint, an Oscar- and Emmy-winning actress known for her roles in Elia Kazan's "On the Waterfront" and Alfred Hitchcock's "North by Northwest," died on Tuesday at the age of 102, her representative said. The cause was reported as natural and she was surrounded by family and loved ones.

Saint began her career in the early 1950s, appearing in 20 feature films and earning five Emmy nominations, winning one for the 1990 miniseries "People Like Us." She worked with notable figures such as Marlon Brando, Cary Grant, Paul Newman and directors including Hitchcock, Kazan and Otto Preminger.

Her breakout performance as Edie Doyle in "On the Waterfront" earned her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1955, just two days before giving birth to her first child. She later portrayed Eve Kendall in "North by Northwest," a role that required a blend of competence and vulnerability.

Saint continued acting across film, television and stage for more than seven decades, with later appearances including a role in "Superman Returns" (2006) and her final film credit in "Winter's Tale" (2014). She was married to television director Jeffrey Hayden until his death in 2016.

She is survived by her two children, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
