Nebraska Looks to End Decade-Long Losing Streak Against Ranked Opponents in Clash with Indiana
Nebraska, now 5-0 for the first time since 2016, will host No. 7 Indiana, seeking its first win over a ranked team in ten years.
Nebraska entered Saturday's game against No. 7 Indiana with a 5-0 record, the program's best start since 2016, and a chance to break a 30-game losing streak to AP Top 25 opponents. The Huskers, now in the fourth year of Matt Rhule's tenure, will host the defending national champions on FOX's Big Noon Saturday.
Defensive coordinator Rob Aurich said the Hoosiers present “a great test” and emphasized the need for the Huskers to play their best football against the conference’s top teams. Offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen noted that Nebraska must improve its third-quarter production, having failed to score in that period in its two most recent games, while the defense has limited opponents to three points in each third quarter.
Running back Jamal Rule, who missed the previous game, is expected to return, giving the Huskers a more balanced ground attack after a modest performance against Maryland. Holgorsen added that Indiana’s rushing attack, led by junior Turbo Richard and senior Lee Beebe Jr., has amassed more than 1,100 yards this season, and slowing it will be a priority for Nebraska’s defense.
Senior quarterback Anthony Colandrea, who has posted a 65.7 percent completion rate, 13 touchdowns and two interceptions, faces his toughest test yet. He has also contributed 249 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Avoiding turnovers will be critical, as Indiana’s 2024 victory over Nebraska was aided by a high turnover margin.
If Nebraska can execute effectively in the opening and third quarters and contain Indiana’s run game, the matchup could mark a turning point in the Huskers’ conference campaign.
