Ohio man sentenced to life without parole for murdering wife

Summary

Caleb Flynn, a former pastor and 2013 "American Idol" contestant, was sentenced to life without parole after being convicted of aggravated murder and related charges in the killing of his wife, Ashley Flynn.

An Ohio judge sentenced Caleb Flynn, 40, to life in prison without the possibility of parole after a jury found him guilty of aggravated murder, multiple counts of murder, felonious assault and tampering with evidence in the death of his wife, Ashley Flynn, 37. Flynn, a former pastor who appeared on "American Idol" in 2013, was convicted of shooting his wife twice in the back of the head while she slept and staging the scene to resemble a burglary.

Judge Jeannine Pratt described the crime as "abhorrent" and said the evidence left “one clear and obvious conclusion” that Flynn poses the highest risk to public safety. Prosecutors argued that Flynn killed his wife to pursue a mistress and benefit from her life insurance and family business, while the defense maintained his innocence and urged a sentence that allowed parole.

During the sentencing hearing, Flynn, in an orange jumpsuit, denied the killing, expressed remorse to his wife's family, and apologized to his two daughters. Victim impact statements from Ashley's daughters highlighted the trauma of losing their mother.

The jury reached its verdict after roughly two and a half hours of deliberation on September 29. Prosecutors had presented evidence including a 911 call, text messages with the mistress, and forensic findings that contradicted the alleged intruder scenario. The defense did not call witnesses and argued that the prosecution's case was circumstantial.

Flynn's attorney indicated an appeal would be filed, citing alleged gaps in evidence of premeditation.
