Green Party leader seeks rule changes after Zionism motion passes
Green Party leader Zack Polanski announced that the party would seek rule changes to give its leaders greater strategic control after a conference in Brighton adopted a motion labeling Zionism as racism. The motion, passed by a small minority of members, declared Zionism an ethnonationalist form of racism, prompting criticism from British Jewish organisations and a diplomatic rebuke from Israel, which said the party now legitimised terrorism.
Jewish Greens chair Vivien Lichtenstein said she might quit the party, while Prime Minister Rishi Burnham urged the Greens to rescind the motion, arguing it undermined a two-state solution. Within the party, Westminster leader Ellie Chowns called for safeguards against extremist capture, and several figures demanded Polanski’s resignation, though he affirmed he would remain leader despite a recent by-election loss.
