Netflix releases seven-hour adaptation of Steinbeck's East of Eden directed by Zoe Kazan

摘要

The streaming service launched a new miniseries of John Steinbeck's novel, directed by Zoe Kazan and starring Florence Pugh as the character Cathy/Kate, offering a longer format than previous adaptations.

Netflix has premiered a seven-hour miniseries based on John Steinbeck's 1952 novel East of Eden, directed by Zoe Kazan, the granddaughter of the novel’s first film director, Elia Kazan. The series stars Florence Pugh in the role of Cathy, later known as Kate, and expands the story beyond earlier screen versions.

The adaptation runs slightly longer than the 1981 ABC miniseries but omits the Irish American family that featured prominently in that version. Instead, it concentrates on the transformation of the central female character, giving her more narrative agency; Kate narrates her own childhood while attending a lecture by a man she intends to confront.

Pugh’s performance is accompanied by Christopher Abbott as Adam and Hoon Lee as the Chinese caretaker, with Martha Plimpton portraying Kate’s madam. The production includes explicit content such as sex scenes and nudity, presented in a matter-of-fact manner rather than for erotic effect.

Critics note that the series retains the novel’s core themes about fate and free will, and it concludes with a tone that suggests the possibility of a hopeful resolution.
