Alabama coach DeBoer praises Georgia quarterback after 20-17 loss

Summary

Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer commended Georgia QB Gunner Stockton's performance while reflecting on his team's shortcomings in a 20-17 defeat.

Alabama fell to Georgia 20-17 on Saturday night, dropping to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the SEC. Head coach Kalen DeBoer said the Bulldogs' quarterback was "clutch," noting Stockton's efficiency and his role in moving the chains throughout the game. Stockton completed 18 of 22 passes for 249 yards, added a touchdown pass, an interception, and a 14-yard rushing touchdown, helping Georgia remain unbeaten at 6-0.

Alabama quarterback Keelon Russell, in his sixth career start, threw for 185 yards and a touchdown on 16 of 30 attempts and rushed for 41 yards, but a fumble on the opening drive and a critical sack late in the fourth quarter limited Alabama's chances. DeBoer highlighted the impact of the sack, saying, "You know you just can’t take a sack in that situation," and praised Russell for continuing to battle despite the pressure.

The coach also expressed frustration over a potential pass-interference call that was not made in Georgia's favor before the sack. He added, "We can’t put the game in that situation where the officials, you know, come into play, and so we just got to control the things we can control. I mean, just feel I guess, it was pass interference."

Georgia's defense recorded four sacks and forced Alabama out of field-goal range late in the game. The Bulldogs amassed 206 rushing yards, led by Dwight Phillips Jr.'s 120 yards on 17 carries, while Alabama managed 161 yards on the ground. DeBoer acknowledged the need for better gap discipline, stating, "I know we’re disappointed on some of the runs that they had, especially in the second half, and how everyone’s got to do their job, stay in their gap."

Looking ahead, Alabama will travel to Tennessee for its next matchup on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. DeBoer said the team will use the loss as a test of character and emphasized confidence in the squad's progress.
