Third-string quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis steps in after Marcus Mariota injury in London game

Resumen

Washington's quarterback depth was tested in the opening quarter of its London matchup against Indianapolis when Marcus Mariota left with a knee injury, prompting rookie Athan Kaliakmanis to take over.

Washington entered the NFL International Series game against the Indianapolis Colts with second-string quarterback Marcus Mariota starting, after starter Jayden Daniels was sidelined with an elbow injury. Early in the first quarter, Mariota was forced out after a collision with Colts defensive lineman Laiatu Latu, who landed on his lower right leg, causing a right-knee injury. The team listed Mariota as questionable for a return. Rookie Athan Kaliakmanis, a seventh-round pick who played college football at Rutgers and Minnesota, replaced him as the third-string quarterback.

"We wish Marcus a speedy recovery and appreciate his effort," a Washington spokesperson said.

Kaliakmanis will now lead the Commanders' offense for the remainder of the contest.
