On 6 October, the Department of Defense said it had appointed SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and Anduril co-founder Palmer Luckey to co-lead a 120-day study of autonomous weapons, drawing criticism over possible financial conflicts. The initiative, called Project Meridian, was first announced on 30 September by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who said the effort would also involve former House speaker Newt Gingrich to assess emerging war technologies. Subsequent reports noted that Musk and Luckey were added to an advisory panel for the project, underscoring the high-profile nature of the task force.

Résumé

The announcement of a 120-day initiative called Project Meridian by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on September 30, 2026, was partially confirmed. Palmer Luckey's appointment to co-lead a 120-day Department of Defense project on the same date was also partially confirmed. There is not enough evidence to support the claim that Elon Musk was appointed to co-lead the project.
