Study Links About One Eighth of 2024 Cancer Cases to Preventable Infections
The International Agency for Research on Cancer said a study published in The Lancet Oncology estimated that roughly one in eight new cancer cases worldwide in 2024 – about 2. 3 million cases – were linked to infections, and that many of these could be avoided through vaccination, screening and therapy. Gizmodo, referencing a WHO analysis, reported that twelve infectious agents were responsible for the 12 % share, with Helicobacter pylori and human papillomavirus providing the largest contributions. Fox News added that HPV, H.
pylori, hepatitis B and C were among the leading pathogens. Yahoo and the New York Post also cited the 2. 3 million-case estimate for 2024.
