Scientists Expect Kelvin Wave to Raise West Coast Sea Levels This Winter
Scientists say a Kelvin wave linked to the current El Niño is expected to raise sea levels by up to a foot along the California, Oregon and Washington coasts through the winter, increasing flood and erosion risks. Earlier reports warned that the warm-water Kelvin wave could combine with an unusually strong El Niño, prompting emergency officials to ready flood defenses and urging residents to prepare for higher tides. The same scientists have repeatedly projected that the wave could persist for several months, potentially intensifying coastal flooding and shoreline erosion across the West Coast.
