Giants acquire quarterback J.J. McCarthy from Vikings for 2027 fifth-round pick

Resumen

New York traded for former first-round quarterback J.J. McCarthy, sending a 2027 fifth-round selection to Minnesota as the team seeks additional depth at the position.

The New York Giants have completed a trade for quarterback J.J. McCarthy, sending a 2027 fifth-round draft pick to the Minnesota Vikings. The move adds a former first-round pick to a quarterback room that already includes Jameis Winston, who recently received a two-year, $13 million extension, and the injured Jaxson Dart.

Giants general manager Joe Schoen confirmed that the trade was finalized after “working the phones” with Minnesota, and the transaction was reported as a Monday-day deal. While McCarthy is expected to provide depth, the team does not anticipate him challenging Winston for the starting role in the immediate future.

The Giants are entering Week 3 against the Tennessee Titans with Winston slated to start, pending Dart’s recovery from a knee injury sustained in the loss to the Los Angeles Rams. The addition of McCarthy gives New York a backup option should further injuries arise at the position.
