Raiders lose 30-27 to Chiefs after halftime confidence
Las Vegas rallied to lead at halftime but Kansas City recovered in the fourth quarter, securing a 30-27 victory. The loss leaves the Raiders at 3-1 while the Chiefs improve to 4-0.
The Las Vegas Raiders entered the fourth quarter with a 19-17 lead after a strong first half that saw them ahead 13-10 at halftime. Head coach Klint Kubiak told CBS reporter Tracy Wolfson they would win, but Kansas City rallied late to win 30-27.
Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes, returning from an ACL injury, led a decisive drive that gave the Chiefs a 17-13 advantage late in the third quarter. A 76-yard run by running back Kenneth Walker set up a Mahomes touchdown pass to Tyquan Thornton, who later suffered an ankle injury.
The Raiders briefly reclaimed the lead with a field goal and a touchdown by Brock Bowers, but a fumble on a kickoff return allowed the Chiefs to score again and extend the margin. A subsequent onside-kick attempt failed, and Kansas City sealed the win with an interception of Kirk Cousins in the final minute.
"We're going to be aggressive going into the game. I don't regret it," Kubiak said after the game, adding that he regretted not taking a missed field-goal opportunity.
"When there's two good teams, that helps the whole thing. That was a battle. That's what this is all about. It's healthy," Chiefs coach Andy Reid said.
The defeat drops the Raiders to 3-1 in the AFC West, while the Chiefs improve to 4-0 and remain the division favorite.
