Chiefs defeat Raiders 30-27 in a back-and-forth AFC West clash
Patrick Mahomes threw for 225 yards and two touchdowns while Kenneth Walker III rushed for 177 yards as Kansas City held off Las Vegas 30-27, improving to 4-0.
Patrick Mahomes led the Kansas City Chiefs to a 30-27 win over the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, extending the Chiefs' season record to 4-0. Mahomes completed 225 passing yards and two touchdowns, while running back Kenneth Walker III contributed 177 rushing yards and two scores, including a decisive 2-yard touchdown run with 3:21 left in the game.
The Raiders, who entered the fourth quarter with a 13-10 lead, rallied with quarterback Kirk Cousins throwing for 365 yards and two touchdowns, and tight end Brock Bowers catching six passes for 86 yards and a score despite playing with an illness. However, Las Vegas managed only 72 rushing yards, prompting coach Klint Kubiak to say, "We've got to find that answer," referring to the team's running game.
Chiefs wide receiver Tyquan Thornton, who had five receptions for 111 yards and two touchdowns, left the game after sustaining a left ankle injury on a 55-yard reception. The Chiefs' defense forced a fumble on the ensuing kickoff, setting up Walker's second touchdown.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid praised Mahomes, stating, "I trust him to do that. I don’t expect anything, but I do trust that he’s going to do the right thing when the ball’s in his hand." Reid also noted that left guard Kingsley Suamataia did not start for disciplinary reasons, with Mike Caliendo filling in.
The victory marks Mahomes' sixth win at Allegiant Stadium against the Raiders and gives Reid his seventh win as a head coach at the venue, the most in its history. The Chiefs will host the Los Angeles Chargers next week, while the Raiders travel to New England for their upcoming game.
