Madonna wins seven VMAs, including Artist of the Year, and delivers rambling acceptance speeches
Madonna topped the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards with seven trophies, highlighted by Artist of the Year, but her acceptance remarks were noted for their disjointed style.
Madonna emerged as the biggest winner at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, taking home seven honors including Artist of the Year. The ceremony was held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, where she opened the show with a performance that featured Sabrina Carpenter on their collaborative track “Bring Your Love.”
The set later transitioned to a bathroom scene from Madonna’s “Danceteria” video, where Charli XCX joined her for a new remix titled “Danceteria Afterhours.” Appearances by Debi Mazar, Julia Garner, Seth Rogen, Andrew Watt and Sombr added to the spectacle.
When Madonna and Carpenter received the Best Collaboration award, Madonna addressed Carpenter’s team for a delayed response, saying, “Everybody who knows me knows how impatient I am. When five days passed, and I still didn’t get connected with Sabrina and hear back from her about whether she wanted to do a song with me, I DM’d her.” She added that the collaboration proceeded quickly after Carpenter replied.
Later, Madonna accepted the Best Dance award for the short film “Confessions II – The Film,” presented by Charli XCX and Troye Sivan. She appeared uncertain about the award’s category, stating, “I’m kind of unclear what this award is for. I guess it’s for the short film?” Charli reopened the envelope to clarify the award. Madonna then spoke about her connection to dance, noting, “I came to life on the dance floor. I found my community on the dance floor. I fell in love with people on a dance floor. And I lost many people I loved on the dance floor.”
Social media users commented on the uneven nature of her speeches, with some expressing concern and others finding the moments endearing.
