Pochettino says Manchester City breach verdict leaves Premier League era tainted
Former manager Mauricio Pochettino described the Premier League’s ruling on Manchester City’s financial breaches as a period of deception that cannot be undone, while the club plans to appeal the sanctions.
Former Premier League manager Mauricio Pochettino said the ruling against Manchester City on financial rule breaches highlighted a "period of deception" that cannot be reversed. An independent panel found the club guilty of 114 of the 115 charges relating to financial misconduct between the 2009-10 and 2017-18 seasons, as well as a failure to cooperate with league investigations from 2018 to 2023. The sanctions have not yet been announced, and City intend to appeal the decision.
Pochettino, who managed Southampton, Tottenham and Chelsea during the relevant years, commented that the verdict underscores damage to sporting fairness. > "Whatever punishment [they choose], it's impossible to turn back time," he said, adding that many clubs adhered to the rules while others did not. He questioned whether economic penalties or point deductions would be sufficient to address the alleged wrongdoing.
The Premier League has yet to disclose the specific penalties that will follow the panel’s findings.
