Former Trump rally shooting victim James Copenhaver dies at 76
James Copenhaver, one of three attendees wounded during the 2024 Butler, Pennsylvania rally where a gunman fired at Donald Trump, died in Pittsburgh at age 76.
James Copenhaver, 76, died on Wednesday at Allegheny Health Network's West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh, his lawyer said. Copenhaver was among three rally attendees injured when a 20-year-old shooter opened fire from a rooftop at a campaign event in Butler, Pennsylvania, in 2024, grazing Donald Trump's right ear and striking Copenhaver in the arm and abdomen. The injuries left him with lasting health problems and he walked with a cane.
Two other attendees were also shot: David Dutch, who survived, and Corey Comperatore, who was killed while protecting his family. Copenhaver's lawyer, Joseph Feldman, issued a statement saying the former veteran died surrounded by loved ones, but did not link his death directly to the 2024 injuries.
In June, Copenhaver and his wife filed a lawsuit against the federal government, alleging inadequate security provided by the Secret Service and the Department of Homeland Security. The complaint described his injuries as severe and life-altering, noting multiple surgeries, including a colon transection and ongoing kidney and nerve damage.
A family statement described Copenhaver as a devoted husband, father and grandfather who had served in the armed forces. President Donald Trump posted a comment on social media calling Copenhaver a "true American patriot" and praising his perseverance.
