U.S. trails International team entering Presidents Cup singles on Sunday
The United States entered the final day of the Presidents Cup 3 points behind the International team, needing a strong singles performance to retain the trophy.
The United States began the final day of the Presidents Cup at Medinah Country Club three points behind the International team, with the overall score at 10.5-7.5. To retain the Cup, the Americans must win at least eight of the 12 singles matches, while the International side needs only five points to secure an upset.
Team captain Brandt Snedeker placed Cameron Young, Wyndham Clark, Justin Thomas and Scottie Scheffler in the opening four matches, hoping to build early momentum. International captain Geoff Ogilvy distributed his top players throughout the lineup.
In the early matches, Young led his opponent Ryo Hisatsune 3 up through 14 holes, while Thomas was 4 up through 12 against Corey Conners. Scheffler also held a 4-up lead through 11 against Nico Echavarria. Other notable results included a 2-up lead for the United States over Chris Gotterup through nine holes, a 1-up lead for Patrick Cantlay over Adam Scott through seven, and a 2-up lead for Russell Henley over Nick Taylor through five.
The singles schedule continued with several matches tied or narrowly decided, leaving the final outcome dependent on the remaining holes. The United States must double its earlier performance to reach the 15.5 points required to win the Cup.
