Remnants of Hurricane Polo Flood New Mexico, Prompting Southwest Evacuations
NPR reported that the weakened remnants of Hurricane Polo triggered heavy rain, road flooding and fears of dam failure in New Mexico on 30 September, prompting evacuations and rescues and spreading impacts into Texas and Oklahoma. Earlier in the week, the storm had intensified to a Category 5 system off Mexico’s Pacific coast, prompting the National Hurricane Center to issue warnings for Baja California Sur. On 22 September, Polo made landfall on the peninsula with winds near 110 mph, causing power outages and localized flooding before weakening as it tracked toward the U.
S. Southwest.
