Mississippi autopsy reports Nolan Wells' death as undetermined

Summary

The Mississippi State Medical Examiner classified the cause and manner of 18-year-old Nolan Wells' death as undetermined, echoing a prior private autopsy, while a grand jury found no basis for criminal charges.

Mississippi officials released the state medical examiner’s autopsy report for 18-year-old Nolan Wells, concluding that both the cause and manner of his death are "undetermined." The report notes that Wells was found face down in water at Horn Island and that investigators could not determine how a noted injury – two dark red-purple subcutaneous scalp contusions on the back of his head – occurred. No external scalp injuries or skull fractures were identified.

The findings align with a private autopsy commissioned by Wells’ family earlier this year, which also listed the death as undetermined pending further investigation. A grand jury that reviewed the case earlier this week determined that no criminal charges are warranted at this time.

Wells disappeared on July 4 after a boat trip with friends to Horn Island, and his body was recovered on July 6. Authorities suspect drowning, though no initial evidence of foul play was found. Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter said investigators are "working diligently to determine exactly what occurred" and that the sheriff’s office welcomed the family’s independent inquiry.

"The only question we have is, what happened to our son?" said Christine Wonsley, Wells’ mother, speaking to reporters.

The case continues to draw national attention as officials and the family seek clarification of the circumstances surrounding the teenager’s death.
