Guardian to Release Documentary 'NAZA' Free Online After Theatrical Run

Résumé

The Guardian and MK2 will launch the Israeli documentary 'NAZA' in theatres worldwide from late September and later make it available for free on the newspaper's website.

The Guardian and French distributor MK2 announced that the documentary NAZA, directed by Israeli filmmakers Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, will open in cinemas in more than 50 territories beginning September 28, following its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival where it received the Special Jury Prize. After the theatrical window, the film will be offered for free on The Guardian’s website, a move the partners said reflects global interest and the outlet’s commitment to independent journalism.

The film, which investigates alleged Israeli military targeting of civilians in Gaza through testimony from intelligence personnel and soldiers, has drawn strong reactions, including criticism from Israeli officials. The directors said they faced threats to their citizenship and personal safety but remain determined to distribute the work.

In North America, NAZA will debut at the New York Film Festival on September 26 and open in U.S. theatres on September 30 at New York’s IFC Center, with a rollout to Los Angeles and other markets beginning October 9. The partners are also exploring ways to screen the documentary in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories.

Produced by The Guardian and JW Films and executive-produced by Jonathan Glazer, the documentary builds on investigative reporting published by The Guardian and other outlets between 2023 and 2025. Abraham and Szor said, "We made this film out of a sense of obligation to use our position as Israelis to examine the systems behind the mass killing of Palestinian civilians for which our country is responsible."

Guardian investigations correspondent Harry Davies, a producer on NAZA, added, "NAZA is grounded in rigorous journalism published over the past three years, but it is also a powerful piece of cinema that will soon be available on screens, large and small, around the world."
