Trump to meet New York City mayor Mamdani during UN General Assembly
President Donald Trump will meet New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani at Gracie Mansion on Monday as the UN General Assembly convenes, with discussions expected to focus on city issues amid broader diplomatic tensions.
President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani at Gracie Mansion on Monday, coinciding with the United Nations General Assembly in the city. City Hall confirmed the meeting will address matters affecting New York City and its residents, though a mayoral spokesperson declined to provide further details.
The gathering takes place on Yom Kippur, the Jewish High Holy Day, and a few days before Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is slated to speak at the UN. Netanyahu is not expected to meet Trump during his brief visit, which has previously drawn protests over accusations of war crimes in Gaza.
Mayor Mamdani, who won the 2025 mayoral race on a platform that included criticism of Israel, had earlier said the city continues its dialogue with the president to deliver results for New Yorkers. He noted that conversations have occurred in person and by phone and will persist as long as both leaders can contribute to the city’s needs.
Mamdani has met Trump previously at the White House in November 2025 and February 2026, where he advocated for federal housing investment and the release of detained pro-Palestinian protesters. Trump later remarked, "We have one thing in common. We want this city of ours that we love to do very well."
The upcoming meeting may be marked by heightened tension as the U.S. midterm elections approach and Trump has recently criticized Mamdani and other local officials. Both leaders have emphasized a diplomatic tone in prior encounters, which city officials say has benefited the city.
