Trump aborts US airstrike as Houthis seize Red Sea ports and high ground

सुरक्षा

President Donald Trump halted a planned U. S. airstrike against Yemen’s Houthi rebels, according to Al Jazeera, as the group seized Red Sea ports and pushed into mountain strongholds in the Taiz and Lahj provinces, leaving hundreds dead and displacing more than 158,000 people. The advance follows a series of attacks earlier this week, when the Houthis claimed missile and drone strikes on Riyadh and the Red Sea port of Yanbu, which Saudi air defenses intercepted without casualties (Euronews, Reuters, NPR).

Saudi officials also reported a ballistic missile aimed at Riyadh being shot down and smoke from a fuel tank near King Khalid International Airport prompting temporary airport disruptions (Yahoo News Canada, The Guardian). The incidents triggered a dip in Saudi and Gulf markets (Reuters) and prompted U. S. officials to discuss possible military responses, with Pentagon leaders later divided over supporting Saudi air strikes (NPR, NBC News).

It was partially confirmed that Saudi Arabia's stock exchange opened lower following Houthi claims of missile and drone strikes on Riyadh on September 20, 2026. The claim of intense fighting in Yemen’s Taiz and Lahj provinces resulting in hundreds of deaths and over 158,000 displaced people on September 22, 2026, was partially confirmed. The statement by Saudi authorities that the incidents caused no injuries or damage was also partially confirmed.
