Netflix cancels Sweet Magnolias after five seasons, orders new drama from its creators
Netflix has ended the romantic series Sweet Magnolias after five seasons and announced a new series, Ladies of the House, from the same showrunners.
Netflix announced that the drama Sweet Magnolias will conclude after its fifth season. The series, developed by Sheryl J. Anderson and based on Sherryl Woods' novels, starred JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Brooke Elliott and Heather Headley as three friends in a small Southern town.
The streaming service also confirmed a new project from Anderson and Swisher titled Ladies of the House, which adapts Lauren Edmondson’s 2021 novel that reimagines Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility. The logline describes a widowed winery owner’s wife and two adult daughters navigating family, business and romantic challenges.
Fans expressed disappointment on social media, noting that several storylines will remain unresolved. The show's writers posted a farewell message on Instagram, thanking the cast, crew and viewers.
Anderson said she is “thrilled to be embarking on this new adventure with JoAnna and Netflix,” adding that the novel provided a foundation for a series about three women dealing with family, friendship and romance. Swisher said she “fell completely in love with Daisy, Cricket and Wallis” and praised Netflix as her creative home for the past seven years.
