Undocumented Ponzi Scheme Convict Seeks U.S. Marriage to Avoid Deportation
NBC News reported that Siddharth Jawahar, an undocumented Indian national serving an 11-year sentence for a multi-million-dollar Ponzi scheme, asked a Missouri federal judge to allow him to marry a U. S. citizen in order to remain in the United States, a request that prosecutors opposed.
Prosecutors had earlier identified Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce among more than 60 victims of the scheme, which defrauded investors of over $35 million. Jawahar pleaded guilty, received the 11-year term and was ordered to pay $31 million in restitution.
