Sony's Resident Evil Opens to $26.3 Million, Setting Franchise Record
Sony's new Resident Evil film earned $26.3 million on its opening day and is projected to reach $55 million over the weekend, the highest debut in the series.
Sony's latest Resident Evil movie opened on 3,684 screens and generated $26.3 million in domestic ticket sales on its first day, topping the Friday box-office. Industry estimates project the film will earn about $55 million by Sunday, making it the strongest opening in the franchise’s history, surpassing the $26 million opening weekend of 2010’s Resident Evil: Afterlife.
The horror reboot, based on Capcom’s video-game series, was directed by Zach Cregger, who previously helmed 2025’s Weapons and 2022’s Barbarian. Austin Abrams stars as a medical courier navigating a zombie outbreak in Raccoon City. Early reviews have been positive; Variety critic Owen Gleiberman described the film as a “sweetly executed piece of escapist trivia” with “quirky relatability.”
The film’s opening placed it ahead of Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock’s Practical Magic 2, which earned $3.1 million in its second week, and it outperformed other Friday releases including Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey. Newcomers such as Vertical’s The Weight and GKids’ Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom also reported modest earnings.
