California Governor Newsom Says He Won’t Run for President in 2028 If Kamala Harris Enters Race
Governor Gavin Newsom told CNN he would not pursue a 2028 presidential campaign if former Vice President Kamala Harris decides to run, citing overlapping voter bases and potential harm to the Democratic Party.
California Governor Gavin Newsom announced on CNN that he would not launch a bid for the 2028 White House if former Vice President Kamala Harris enters the race. He said competing against Harris, a fellow California Democrat, would create an electoral disadvantage for the party. "I wouldn’t run if she ran," Newsom said, adding that the overlap between their supporters would be too great to justify a primary contest. He described the situation as offering no benefit to voters or the party and said it would be a "gift" to opponents. Harris has not confirmed whether she will run in 2028, previously stating she has not made a decision and is focusing on the midterm elections. Both Harris’s and Newsom’s offices declined to comment further on the remarks.
