Mahomes cites rushed reads and overstriding in post-game interview after Chiefs' season-opening win
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes said he was too quick with his reads and overstrided on several throws in the Chiefs' 31-10 victory over Denver, while head coach Andy Reid acknowledged a lack of practice on a specific play that led to an interception.
Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes said his first game back from knee surgery was marked by rushed decision-making and technical issues. After the Chiefs defeated the Denver Broncos 31-10, Mahomes told reporters he was "a little quick with my reads" and that overstriding caused some throws to fall short. He added that he needs to work on longer passes to regain his rhythm.
Mahomes also noted specific moments where he forced throws to tight end Travis Kelce and receiver Xavier, rather than waiting for secondary reads that might have opened better opportunities for teammates such as running back Kenneth Walker.
Head coach Andy Reid addressed the interception that set up Denver's field goal, saying the play was not rehearsed enough and that the responsibility for the missed execution rested with the coaching staff. Reid praised Broncos safety Brandon Jones for his coverage that contributed to the turnover.
Both Mahomes and Reid indicated that the team will focus on refining reads and practice repetitions ahead of the Week 2 matchup against the Indianapolis Colts.
