NATO forces intercept Russian submarine exercise targeting undersea cables in Arctic

Resumen

British, Norwegian and U.S. forces tracked and diverted three Russian submarines conducting a training drill near Svalbard, preventing any damage to undersea communication cables.

British, Norwegian and U.S. naval units intercepted three Russian submarines conducting a month-long training exercise in Arctic waters near Norway's Svalbard archipelago, according to two Western officials cited by Reuters. The submarines were reportedly testing a covert method for disabling undersea fiber-optic cables, though no details of the technology were disclosed.

The joint operation, described as a coordinated effort by the United Kingdom, Norway and the United States, succeeded in tracking and diverting the vessels before any cables or pipelines were harmed.

"Through our joint operation, we sent a clear message to Russia that they cannot operate covertly," Norway's defence minister Tore Sandvik told Reuters. "We have made it unequivocally clear to Russian authorities that any attempt to target our critical infrastructure will be detected and met with consequences. It is in no one's interest to escalate tensions in the High North."

Undersea cables, which carry the majority of global internet traffic and financial transactions, have become a focus of security concerns after the 2022 sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines. Experts note that while surveying seabed infrastructure in international waters is legal, such activity may indicate preparation for future sabotage.

NATO declined to provide further specifics about the operation, and Russia's defence ministry did not comment.
