Vice President Vance moderates Trump’s $5,000 dividend proposal for Republicans
JD Vance said the promised $5,000 payments would not be given to wealthy individuals and might be funded by tariff revenues, contradicting earlier statements by Donald Trump at the GOP midterm convention.
Vice President JD Vance indicated that the $5,000 “dividend” touted by President Donald Trump for Republican victories in the upcoming midterm elections would not be distributed to all citizens and could be financed through tariff revenues, a figure that would exceed current tariff collections. Vance added that any such payment would require congressional approval.
Trump had told a crowd at the Republican midterm convention in Dallas that a Republican win would mean a $5,000 payout to voters, describing the benefit as a reward for supporting the party. He also urged supporters to act as if he were on the ballot.
The White House has not released details on how the dividend would be implemented. Legal challenges to Trump’s tariff program, some of which were rejected by the Supreme Court, further complicate the financing claim.
During his speech, Trump praised his administration’s economic record and warned of negative outcomes if Democrats gain control of either chamber of Congress. He also criticized opponents and highlighted select Republican candidates.
Democratic Senator John Fetterman appeared virtually at the convention to endorse a Republican Senate candidate in Pennsylvania, emphasizing his opposition to what he termed “extremes and socialism.” Several Republican incumbents, including Senators Susan Collins and Dan Sullivan, opted not to attend the event.
