Backup Seahawks quarterback Drew Lock throws TD on unpracticed play
Seattle's backup quarterback Drew Lock threw a touchdown pass to Jaxon Smith-Njigba on a play he had never run in practice, helping the Seahawks take the lead against New England.
Seattle quarterback Drew Lock entered the game in the second half after Sam Darnold left with an injury. With the Seahawks trailing 10-3 and facing a fourth-and-1 on the Patriots' 45-yard line, offensive coordinator Brian Fleury called a play-action pass that Lock had never rehearsed. The pass to wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba resulted in a first down and a subsequent 70-yard touchdown as Smith-Njigba ran to the end zone.
"It is like a classic football play, but definitely never ran it. Looked kind of funny before the snap," Lock said on the team website.
Lock finished with 16 completions on 22 attempts for 187 yards and also connected with Cooper Kupp to set up a go-ahead field goal. He credited the defense for keeping the game close.
"Knowing the type of defense that we have, there is no rush to push the ball down the field. Let's find ways to get the ball in our guys' hands," he added.
The performance gave Seattle a chance to win in its second series of the 2026 season.
