Bills Mafia energizes opening of $2.2 billion Highmark Stadium

Résumé

Buffalo defeated Detroit 41–31 in the inaugural game at Highmark Stadium, with loud fan support and a Canadian anthem performance highlighting the team's cross-border fan base.

Buffalo's fan base helped set a lively tone for the opening of Highmark Stadium on Thursday night, as the Bills beat the Detroit Lions 41–31 in a primetime matchup. The new venue, which cost $2.2 billion and features a European-soccer-inspired design, amplified crowd noise throughout the game, and the team’s supporters were audible from the opening player introductions through most of the action.

"We have not handled what we need to be doing right now," Lions coach Dan Campbell said during the halftime broadcast, adding that the situation was challenging for his team.

Quarterback Josh Allen contributed to five combined touchdowns, moving Buffalo to a 2–0 start for the season. Ticket resale data showed an average entry price of $569 for the opener, the highest among Week 2 games, and the remaining home games are also expected to command triple-digit resale prices.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, a native of nearby Jamestown, praised the event, saying, "This is something spectacular and something that I think is going to make the people of Buffalo really proud. This community loves the Bills, loves football, and has such great pride in it."

The pre-game ceremony featured a performance of the Canadian national anthem by the Barenaked Ladies, marking the first time the anthem was played at a Bills game. The inclusion reflects the significant portion of the team's fan base located in Ontario, where about 12 % of personal-seat license holders and 20 % of the waiting list are Canadian.

"The passion and support we feel from our Canadian fans is incredible, and we look forward to continuing to deepen those relationships," Bills chief strategy officer Kate Hussmann said.

The team, which holds territorial rights to Canada under the NFL’s Global Markets Program, has several Canadian minority partners and a partnership with Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment.
