Stefany Shaheen Wins Democratic Primary for New Hampshire's 1st Congressional District
Stefany Shaheen, daughter of Senator Jeanne Shaheen, secured the Democratic nomination for New Hampshire's 1st Congressional District as incumbent Rep. Chris Pappas runs for the U.S. Senate.
Stefany Shaheen won the Democratic primary for New Hampshire's 1st Congressional District early Wednesday, positioning her for the November general election. The race opened after incumbent Rep. Chris Pappas announced a Senate bid, leaving the seat vacant.
Pappas, who has represented the district since 2019, issued a statement saying he is "honored that the people of New Hampshire have entrusted me to fight for them; I’m proud of what we have accomplished together and I’m going to continue this fight in the U.S. Senate."
The primary featured nine candidates, including Marine veteran Maura Sullivan, union organizer Carleigh Beriont, and Army National Guard officer Christian Urrutia, who later withdrew and endorsed Shaheen. Shaheen, a former Portsmouth City Council member and local business owner, received an endorsement from her mother, Senator Jeanne Shaheen, who said, "I’m so proud that Stefany is answering the call to serve the district she was born and raised in… She’s working hard to earn voters’ support in her own right and on her own merits."
Shaheen’s campaign emphasizes Medicare for All, tax credits for first-time homebuyers, and reforms to Immigration and Customs Enforcement. With the primary concluded, she will face the Republican nominee in the November 3 general election.
