Patriots offensive line under scrutiny after Seattle pressure on rookie quarterback
Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels said the team failed to protect rookie quarterback Drake Maye against Seattle's blitzes, prompting a review of the line's performance.
The New England Patriots' offensive line came under criticism after Seattle's defense repeatedly pressured rookie quarterback Drake Maye during the opening drive of the Super Bowl loss. After an initial series that relied on Rhamondre Stevenson’s runs, the Patriots attempted a vertical passing pattern, but a miscommunication on a chip block allowed Seattle defender Derick Hall to sack Maye. Maye subsequently scrambled and threw the ball away as Seattle cornerback Devon Witherspoon blitzed unimpeded.
"I didn't do a good enough job. Point it at me. They 'out-everythinged' us in the game," offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels said, acknowledging Seattle's effective rush concepts and blitz timing.
Patriots line coach Doug Marrone said the team monitors defensive tendencies to keep its blocking schemes consistent, while veteran lineman Morgan Moses declined to comment on specific defensive tells. The coaching staff indicated that lessons from the loss will inform adjustments for the upcoming season, which features several new players on both sides of the ball.
