Patriots quarterback Drake Maye looks to build on offseason progress in Seattle opener
Patriots QB Drake Maye says increased freedom and a faster tempo will help the team start the season strongly against the Seahawks, while coach Mike Vrabel emphasizes tempo and decision-making at the line of scrimmage.
Patriots quarterback Drake Maye expects his second year in the Josh McDaniels system to be more productive as the team opens the season in Seattle against the Seahawks. Maye noted that the team has a chance to begin the year on a positive note after a recent loss in the Super Bowl, adding that the upcoming game offers an opportunity to demonstrate growth.
"I think it's earned," Maye said, referring to the additional autonomy he has been given at the line of scrimmage. He described his comfort with simple checks and the ability to make more aggressive calls when he reads the defense.
Head coach Mike Vrabel highlighted the importance of tempo, stating that varying the huddle and snap cadence can prevent opponents from anticipating the Patriots' actions.
"Whether we huddle, we don’t huddle and allow Drake to get us in a good call, I think all those things are good, and we’ll continue to build and work with that," Vrabel said in August.
The coaching staff has been emphasizing a faster pace since spring practices, aiming to improve the offense's ability to execute after chunk plays. Maye's performance in the previous season included 295 passing yards and two touchdowns, though he also recorded two interceptions and six sacks. The Patriots hope the adjustments will translate into a more effective offensive showing in the season opener.
