U.S. leaders cite historic adoption of "America" name amid Trump’s New Mexico rename push
U. S. leaders said the name "America" was historically adopted for the United States, a practice that began with a 1507 map and persisted as the nation expanded, CNN reported on 10 September. They added that Latin American countries still use the word to refer to the entire hemisphere.
Earlier in September, President Donald Trump shared an image that replaced the name "New Mexico" with "New America", CNN reported. The White House reposted the image, Fox News said. Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and other state Democrats criticized the proposal, saying the name is fixed in the state constitution, NBC News reported. Euronews described the suggestion as a distraction from domestic issues.
