Iranian drones and missile strike hits US-contracted vessel near Strait of Hormuz

Résumé

Iran launched drones and a missile at a ship operating under a US contract in the Strait of Hormuz, causing minor injuries to American personnel on board.

Iranian forces attacked a vessel operating under a United States contract in the Strait of Hormuz this week, using four drones and at least one missile, according to a report. The strike resulted in minor injuries among the American crew members, though the ship’s name, cargo and whether the personnel were private or government employees were not disclosed.

The incident follows a breakdown in a tentative maritime de-escalation agreement reached in July, as Tehran seeks to assert control over the strategic waterway. The United States has been providing support to commercial vessels transiting the bottleneck.

The attack occurred shortly after the Iran-aligned Houthi movement in Yemen seized several islands at the Red Sea’s entrance, prompting concerns about broader disruptions to global shipping routes.

The Pentagon and the White House directed inquiries to U.S. Central Command, which declined to comment.

"We will continue to protect the free flow of commerce in the region," a Pentagon spokesperson said in a statement.
