Pennsylvania Democrats consider 2028 Senate candidates as Fetterman faces internal opposition

Resumen

State party leaders are discussing potential successors for Senator John Fetterman's seat in 2028, with Rep. Chris Deluzio emerging as a leading contender amid growing frustration with Fetterman's recent actions.

State Democrats in Pennsylvania are already weighing options for the 2028 Senate race, despite Senator John Fetterman's uncertain future. Party insiders say Rep. Chris Deluzio, a Navy veteran representing a swing district near Pittsburgh, is gaining traction as a consensus candidate who could appeal to both Governor Josh Shapiro’s establishment and the progressive wing linked to Senator Bernie Sanders.

Deluzio, who is seeking a third term in the House, highlighted his bipartisan support after headlining a Shapiro event and receiving an endorsement from Sanders, who described him as “a fighter willing to take on corporate power.”

“I’m not concerned about what John Fetterman decides to do. I’ll make my own decision without whatever he decides affecting it,” Deluzio told CNN, adding that his focus remains on the current election cycle.

Other potential contenders include Rep. Brendan Boyle of Philadelphia, Lt. Gov. Austin Davis, and former Rep. Conor Lamb, though Lamb is considered a less likely entrant in a crowded primary. Boyle told CNN he could choose between a House leadership role and a Senate run, depending on which position would allow greater policy impact.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has continued outreach to Fetterman, hosting him for dinner last month, but several Pennsylvania Democrats indicated they would not welcome the senator on campaign trails. Deluzio said he has not heard any requests for joint appearances, and Rep. Madeline Dean expressed that party members are “livid” over what she described as Fetterman’s abandonment of his earlier platform.

Fetterman issued a statement after his recorded remarks at a Republican convention, reaffirming his Democratic affiliation and pledging to vote with his party on key issues. He declined to comment on future campaign plans or his relationship with state party leaders.

The internal debate reflects broader tensions within the Pennsylvania Democratic Party, which is balancing electoral strategy in a presidential election year with concerns about Fetterman's alignment on issues such as Israel, abortion and gun policy. Some officials warned that if Fetterman were to shift parties, it could affect Senate control after the November elections.
