Xbox limits cloud gaming hours for Game Pass, exempts existing members in select regions
Xbox will cap monthly cloud gaming usage for Game Pass tiers, but existing subscribers in certain countries will not be affected under current auto-renew plans.
Microsoft's Xbox division announced that, beginning in November, cloud gaming on Game Pass will be limited to a set number of hours per month—15 for Ultimate, 10 for Premium and 5 for Essential subscribers. The company said the caps are intended to manage rising costs as more users stream games.
In a recent email to some members, Xbox clarified that the new limits will not apply to current subscribers who remain on an auto-renewing plan, provided they stay in the market where they originally signed up. The message stated: "Recently, you may have heard about changes to how cloud gaming is included with Xbox Game Pass subscriptions. At this time, these changes will only affect new purchases and will not affect your current subscription for the market in which you reside, as long as you are on an auto-recurring plan. Should you choose to cancel your plan and repurchase, you will receive a set number of cloud gaming hours each month, based on your plan. If for any reason there may be changes to your existing account, we will notify you at least 60 days in advance and you will have the option to cancel or change your subscription plan at any time."
Users on Reddit reported that the exemption emails have been sent to subscribers in Australia, Brazil, Poland and Germany, but not to those in the United States, Canada or the United Kingdom. Analysts suggest the discrepancy may stem from differing consumer-protection laws that restrict retroactive changes to subscription terms.
Xbox previously explained that the hourly caps are needed because "the cost of providing cloud gaming grows as more people use it and play for longer," adding that the limits will affect about 4% of its Game Pass base based on current usage patterns.
