Microsoft to impose hourly limits on Xbox Cloud Gaming starting November 2026

Resumen

Microsoft will cap monthly Xbox Cloud Gaming usage for Game Pass subscribers, with limits ranging from 5 to 15 hours depending on the tier, prompting criticism from users and comparisons with competing services.

Microsoft announced that, beginning in November 2026, Xbox Cloud Gaming will be subject to monthly usage caps. Game Pass Ultimate members will be limited to 15 hours, Premium subscribers to 10 hours, and Essential tier users to 5 hours. The company estimates the caps will affect about 4% of Game Pass subscribers, which still represents over a million users.

The limits were introduced as Microsoft expands the service to additional TV platforms, including LG, Samsung and TCL models. The change has drawn criticism from gamers, who note that the new caps are far lower than the previously unlimited access.

Competitor NVIDIA GeForce Now, which also imposes hourly limits, offers higher allowances—up to 100 hours on its top tiers—and claims better bitrate, latency and stability. Unlike GeForce Now, which streams games users already own, Xbox Cloud Gaming provides a larger library of titles as part of the Game Pass subscription.

Microsoft has said it will offer optional per-hour passes for additional access, though pricing details have not been disclosed. Some users have suggested Xbox Remote Play as an alternative, but the feature currently streams at 1080p, compared with the 1440p resolution available through Cloud Gaming.

Industry sources indicated that the shift reflects broader cost pressures on Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure, particularly as the company reallocates resources toward artificial-intelligence workloads. Internal restructuring and recent layoffs have also been linked to efforts to improve profitability across the Xbox division.

The company has begun testing 1440p streaming for Xbox Remote Play in its Insider program, but it remains unclear whether the new usage caps will be adjusted in response to user feedback.
