Kimi Antonelli Wins Italian Grand Prix from 19th on Grid, Russell Second, Verstappen Third
Britain's Kimi Antonelli claimed victory at Monza after starting 19th, with George Russell finishing second and Max Verstappen third.
Kimi Antonelli secured a surprise win at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, climbing from 19th on the grid to finish first. George Russell completed the podium in second place, while Max Verstappen took third. Lando Norris moved past Oscar Piastri to claim fourth, and the two Mercedes drivers battled for position in the closing laps.
"Unbelievable. I'm so happy, I could never have imagined to be here today, but we pulled it off," Antonelli said after the race, adding that the breaking-up tarmac made the final laps challenging.
"Huge congrats to Kimi, an incredible result from him," Russell commented, noting his own tyre struggles on a single hard compound and expressing disappointment at not winning.
"Yeah there were some good battles, I had to send it around the outside as we were struggling with deployment through Turn 2 to 4 compared to our competitors," Verstappen explained, describing difficulties with top speed and a momentary loss of overtake mode.
The race featured multiple restarts and overtaking attempts, with drivers navigating deteriorating track conditions. Antonelli maintained a lead of about 1.1 seconds over Russell in the final stages, while Norris and Hamilton fought for positions further back. Mercedes instructed its drivers to avoid contact, but the rivalry continued as they vied for track position.
The result extends Antonelli's championship lead and marks his first Formula 1 victory on home soil.
