Norway Detains Russian Cruise Ship in Svalbard Over Ukraine Arbitration Award
Norwegian authorities seized the Russian vessel Professor Molchanov in Svalbard following a court order, part of Ukraine's effort to enforce a $4.22 billion Hague arbitration award against Russia.
Norwegian officials detained the Russian cruise ship Professor Molchanov in the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard on Wednesday after a district court order, acting on a request from Ukraine’s state energy company Naftogaz. The seizure is intended to enforce a $4.22 billion arbitration award issued by a Hague tribunal in 2023 that held Russia liable for the seizure of Ukrainian energy assets in Crimea.
Naftogaz CEO Sergii Fedorenko said the action represents “another important step towards restoring justice for Russia’s unlawful seizure of Naftogaz assets in Crimea” and affirmed the company’s intent to continue pursuing Russian assets worldwide.
Russian President Vladimir Putin described the detention of civilian vessels and attacks on merchant shipping as “acts of state terrorism” and linked the incident to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s recent warnings to foreign airlines about safety over Russia. Speaking at the Eastern Economic Forum, Putin said such incidents “complicated” prospects for future peace talks and accused Ukraine’s allies of being “complicit in international terrorism.”
The vessel, which operates commercial expedition cruises to Svalbard, is now barred from leaving its current location in Barentsburg pending further legal proceedings.
