Wimbledon bans influencer credentials after US Open disruption
Wimbledon officials announced on 6 September that the tournament will not create a media-accreditation category for influencers and will confiscate any equipment, such as selfie lights, that could interfere with play, citing recent disruptions at the U. S. Open. The decision aims to prevent similar interruptions in future matches.
The cited incident occurred on 31 August at the U. S. Open in New York, when a group of influencers in a suite used a bright selfie light during Naomi Osaka’s second-round match, prompting the chair umpire to halt play. The USTA said such incidents are rare, and players later voiced concerns about influencer activity and overall etiquette at the event.
