Three dead, including shooter, and six injured in downtown Minneapolis apartment shooting
A shooting at the Loring Towers apartment building in downtown Minneapolis left three people dead, including the suspect, and injured six others, among them three police officers.
Minneapolis police responded to a report of gunfire at 4:36 p.m. on Wednesday at Loring Towers, a high-rise at 15 East Grant Street. Officers arrived within two minutes, encountered multiple victims and heard additional shots, and moved to an upper floor where visibility was limited by haze. They exchanged fire with the suspect, identified as Carlton Johnson II, and three officers were wounded—two by gunfire and one with a non-life-threatening injury. One officer required surgery, but all are expected to recover fully.
Four victims were taken to Hennepin County Medical Center; one was pronounced dead there, another died at the scene, and the suspected shooter also died, though authorities have not disclosed the cause of his death. In total, nine people were involved, with six injured, including the three officers.
Mayor Jacob Frey praised the responding officers for their actions, saying their bravery prevented a higher death toll. Interim police chief Bill Peterson expressed his condemnation of the violence and commended the officers' response. Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty called the incident a "terrible and shocking attack" and urged anyone with information to contact law enforcement.
A crash involving a Minneapolis squad car injured two officers, and four officers reported adverse effects after exposure to an unknown airborne substance. Multiple agencies, including University of Minnesota police, Minnesota State Patrol, and the FBI, assisted the investigation. The American Red Cross and the Salvation Army set up assistance for residents, and a gathering was organized at Central Lutheran Church for those affected.
