Two dead and three officers wounded in downtown Minneapolis shooting
A gunman opened fire in a downtown Minneapolis apartment building, killing two people and wounding three police officers before the suspect was found dead.
A gunman opened fire in a downtown Minneapolis apartment building just after 4:30 p.m. local time, killing two people and wounding several others, including three police officers. Police spokesperson Garret Parten said officers entered the high-rise minutes after the call and found one victim dead at the scene. Four additional victims were taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, where one later died. The three officers, two of whom were shot, remain in stable condition.
Parten said it was not yet clear how the shooter died and that investigators have not disclosed a motive. Video posted to social media showed police aiming weapons at the building near the Minneapolis Convention Center.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz thanked emergency responders and said state officials are assisting local law enforcement. House Speaker Lisa Demuth expressed prayers for the victims.
The Minneapolis shooting occurred on the same day as a separate incident at Westwood Hills Elementary School in Waynesboro, Virginia, where a 19-year-old gunman killed himself after wounding a staff member. The events follow recent mass shootings in Chicago, Illinois, and Trenton, New Jersey, that left at least three dead and 18 injured.
