Two dead and several injured, including two officers, in downtown Minneapolis shooting
A shooting at the Loring Tower apartment building in downtown Minneapolis left two people dead, four injured and the gunman dead by suicide, with two police officers among the wounded.
Police responded to a disturbance call at the Loring Tower apartment building near 15 East Grant Street at about 4:36 p.m. on Wednesday. Officers entered the building shortly thereafter and encountered multiple victims on the ground while hearing gunfire from upper floors. The gunfire continued as officers moved upward, and two officers were shot—one in the stomach and another in the leg. The officer with the stomach wound underwent surgery and was listed as stable, while the other officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to recover fully.
Four civilians were also wounded; one died at the scene and another later died in hospital. Two other victims remain hospitalized with gunshot injuries. A source confirmed the suspect died by suicide after the incident.
Minneapolis Police Interim Chief Bill Peterson said the officers acted quickly to confront the shooter and expressed gratitude for their actions. "> I want to express my sincere gratitude and my pride in the officers who responded without hesitation and heroically placed themselves between a violent shooter and those he intended to harm," he said.
Federal agents from the ATF, the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, and the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension were on site by early evening. The investigation remains ongoing.
